What Would You Do With This Vintage Post Office Box Door?

Hello friends! Thanks so much for stopping by for my revived Vintage "Stuff" Linky Party---The Vintage Show and Tell! It's been a year or so since I last ran this party and I'm super excited to be offering it again. Please link up your recent posts featuring vintage "stuff" and share the party with all your friends!

Earlier this week, I was at the post office here in Pendleton, Oregon and noticed these metal post office box doors sitting on the counter. They were selling them for $5 each so I asked the clerk about them. She said they had a whole box of them that they were selling and let me sift through it to find the best one. Most of them were dated in the 1950s but this one from 1971 was the only one that still retained the box number.

What kinds of crafty things would you do with this cute bit of history? I was looking up ideas and found this neat project by Brynne at The Gathered Home. I especially like her little GIF that shows how she painted around the Greek key designs.

I can't wait to see what you've got to share with us this week!

  1. What a great find for only $5. I'm old enough to remember this type of metal P.O. box with the little keys.

    1. We lived in a little town several years ago that had them in the P.O. Not sure what the current ones are like as we've received mail at our home the last 10 years!

  2. We had a mailbox like yours when I was a kid in a very small town and we had to walk downtown to get the mail. Our mailbox had a combination to open it rather than a key. What fun for you to have one. :) Thank you for the new link party!

  3. I am go glad you stopped by my blog and left a comment.
I always liked those old post office doors and years ago was very sought after by collectors. I think $5 was a bargain

  4. I have one of those mailbox 'doors'. I wish I had bought MORE when I bought this one years ago. I use it as a photo display. I change out family photos in the little window and prop it up in groupings with other vintage items. Thanks for hosting the party!

    1. That's a cute idea! Yeah, I've debated going back and buying up the rest to resell...but I'll bet there are other people in the community who would like to buy one for nostalgia's sake. The clerk said they each got one as a Christmas gift from the postmaster. I thought that was sweet!

  5. Sarah, is something from 1962 considered vintage? That's the year this china pattern came out, not sure what year the woman bought the tea set she just gave me, but I think it was in the 70s.
